SK 5 - Lotte 4, Incheon [Box Score]

Lotte held the lead for most of the game, ahead 3-0 after 6 innings. SK would tie it up in the bottom of the 7th off of 3 doubles and 1 single. But SK handed the lead right back to the Giants, when in the top og the 8th, with 2 outs and the bases loaded, SK reliever Park Hee-Soo beaned Lotte left fielder Lee Seung-Hwa to bring the go-ahead run home. Trailing 3-4, it came down to the bottom of the 9th for SK. Park Jung-Kwon would lead off the inning with a single, and a sacrifice bunt would bring him to second base with one out. Chung Sang-Ho came up next and hit a double to bring Park home and tie the game at 4-4. The next batter, Second baseman Jeong Keun-Woo, hit a walk-off double to left field to end the game.

Jeong's walk-off double

LG 8 - Samsung 4, Daegu [Box Score]

It was a close game down in Daegu, with LG leading 4-2 heading into the 9th inning. Samsung and LG have arguably the league's two best closers in Oh Seung-Hwan and Bong Jung-Keun, but they both made critical mistakes toward the end of tonight's game. Bong entered the game for LG to pitch the bottom of the 9th, with his team leading by 2 runs. Bong gave up 2 singles and hit a batter to load the bases with one out. Then Bae Yeong-Seop hit a grounder to shortstop. The Twins got the out at second but were unable to convert the double play, bringing the score to 4-3 with 2 outs. Bong then threw a wild pitch, allowing Kim Sang-Su to score from third base, bringing the score to 4-4 and sending the game to extra innings. LG started off the top of the 10th with a quick single and a sacrifice bunt to put a runner on second with 1 out. Oh Seung-Hwan was brought into the game to face Lee Byeong-Kyu. Oh walked him, and then gave up a single to Moon Seon-Jae to load the bases with 1 out. The next batter hit a shallow pop out. There were now 2 outs and it looked like Oh may find his was out of the jam. Son Joo-In came to the plate and hit a grounder between first and second base. First baseman Lee Seung-Yeop dove for it, but missed it, the ball was fielded by second baseman Kim Tae-Wan, but Oh was a little late covering first base. He missed the throw and 2 runs scored for LG on the error charged to the pitcher. The Twins would score 2 more on a single to center field by catcher Hyun Jae-Yun. Samsung came up empty in the bottom half of the inning and the game ended with a score of 8-4. With the win, LG jumped ahead of both KIA and Nexen and now sits in second place for the first since April 13, just 2 games behind Samsung.

Lotte 4 - Doosan 2, Seoul (Jamsil) [Box Score]

Doosan held the lead for the majority of the game, ahead 2-0 after 7 innings. Lotte tied up the game at 2-2 in a top of the 8th that included 2 walks and 3 singles. The score remained tied heading into extra innings. Doosan had a few chances to win, including loading the bases in the bottom of the 10th, but the failed to put any runs on the board. Lotte would score 2 runs in the top of the 11th with RBIs coming from Park Jun-Seo and Kang Min-Ho. Doosan starter Yu Heui-Kwan pitched 7 scoreless innings, but it was the bullpen that let the game get away, with the loss going to reliever Oh Hyoun-Taek. Chris Oxspring pitched 6 1/3 innings for Lotte, giving up 8 hits and 2 runs. The win went to Kim Seung-Hwae and Kim Sung-Bae picked up the save. Lotte swept the rain-shortened series, and Doosan continues to struggle, having now lost 8 of their last 10 games.

NC 4 - LG 3, Changwon [Box Score]

LG was up 3-2 after 7 innings, but the Dinos showed up late in the game to pull out the win. In the bottom of the 8th, pinch hitter Kwon Hee-Dong hit an RBI double to tie the game at 3-3. LG relief pitcher Lee Sang-Ryeol gave the game away in the bottom of the 9th, walking 3 consecutive batters to load the bases with no outs. Lee was replaced with Lim Jeong-Woo, who threw only one pitch, which was hit into left field by NC designated hitter Lee Ho-Jun to bring home the winning run. The win went to NC reliever Lim Chang-Min who pitched 2 perfect innings, not allowing a single LG batter on base.

Lee Ho-Jun's walk-off single

Samsung 5 - SK 2, Incheon [Box Score]

SK scored both of their runs early, but the rest of the game was all Samsung. The Lions scored 4 runs in the top of the 3rd, including Lee Seung-Yeop's record-breaking 3-run homerun, plus an RBI single from DH Choi Hyeong-Woo. The score was 4-2 at the end of the 3rd inning, and the Wyverns would not score for the rest of the game. Samsung added one more with a solo homerun by  Kim Tae-Wan in the top of the 8th to give us the final score of 5-2. Aneury Rodriguez was the winning pitcher for Samsung, allowing 3 hits and 2 runs in 6 innings. The two teams split the series, and each will face a hot team at home over the weekend. Samsung will host LG in Daegu, and Lotte will visit Incheon to play SK.

Jun
20

In the top of the 3rd inning of tonight's game between Samsung and SK at Incheon's Munhak Stadium, Lee Seung-Yeop hit the 352nd homerun of his KBO career, breaking the previous record set by retired Samsung outfielder Yang Joon-Hyuk at 351. It was a 3-run shot to left field which gave the Lions the lead. Samsung went on to win the game 5-2. Check out the video below. More on this story later.

Wednesday KBO Game Highlights (2013/06/19)

Jun
19

LG 4 - NC 1, Changwon [Box Score]

NC got on the board first with an RBI single from Lee Ho-Jun in the bottom of the 1st to take the early 1-0 lead. They would hold the lead for most of the game, as LG managed just 1 hit in the first 7 innings of the game. The LG bats finally came to life with 2 outs in the bottom of the 8th. After back to back singles by Park Yong-Taik and Jeong Ui-Yoon, left fielder Lee Byeong-Kyu came to the plate and hit a 3-run homerun to right field to give LG the lead. The next batter, Jeong Seong-Hoon, hit another homerun to almost the exact same spot. Watching on TV, at first I thought it was just another replay of Lee's homerun. Jeong's homerun put the Twins ahead 4-1, which would be the final score. LG has now won 6 in a row, and is edging ever closer to Samsung and Nexen in the league standings.

Lee and Jeong's back to back homeruns

SK 4 - Samsung 2, Incheon [Box Score]

The game was tied 1-1 after 7 innings. SK first baseman Park Jung-Kwon came to the plate with the bases loaded and 2 outs in the bottom of the 8th to face Rick VandenHurk. Park hit a double to left field to bring all 3 baserunners home, and to put SK up 4-1. The Lions would manage to score 1 in the top of the 9th, but it wasn't enough to catch the Wyverns. Jo-Jo Reyes pitched 8 innings, allowing just 5 hits and 1 earned run while striking out 7 batters to earn the win, while VandenHurk took the loss for Samsung.

KIA 8 - Hanwha 2, Daejeon [Box Score]

Lee Bum-Ho was the story for KIA tonight. He went 3 for 4 with back to back homeruns in the 5th and 7th innings. With 4 RBIs and 3 runs scored, Lee was involved in 7 of KIA's 8 runs. Henry Sosa earned the win for KIA, his 8th win of the season, which places him tied for the league lead with teammate Yang Hyeon-Jong. Hanwha starter Dana Eveland takes the loss, making him the first pitcher in the league to rack up 7 losses this season. On one hand, when you play for a team like Hanwha you can't say that the losses are entirely his fault, on the other hand, his ERA of 5.94 is not exactly helping matters. Evenland just slightly edges out LG's Ben Jukich for the title of worst foreign pitcher.

Lotte 13 - Doosan 6, Seoul (Jamsil) [Box Score]

Sunday KBO Game Highlights (2013/06/16)

Jun
17

LG 5 - Nexen 4, Seoul (Jamsil) [Box Score]

LG did all of their scoring early in the game, up 5-2 after 3 innings. Nexen would score 2 in the top of the 7th to make the game close. They had a final chance to tie or take the lead in the top of the 9th with shortstop Kang Jung-Ho coming to the plate with the bases loaded and 1 out. Unfortunately for the Heroes, Kang hit a grounder to shortstop which resulted in a double play, ending the game. LG starter Woo Kyu-Min came away with the win after allowing 5 hits and 2 runs in 5 innings. Andy Van Hekken took the loss for Nexen, allowing 5 earned runs in just 2 2/3 innings. Bong Jung-Keun earned the save, although he came dangerously close to blowing it at the end. LG completed the sweep, and Nexen has now lost seven games in a row.

KIA 9 - SK 7, Gwangju [Box Score]

It was a high scoring game, but KIA never trailed. The Tigers scored most of their runs early, leading 6-1 after 4 innings. SK first baseman Park Jung-Won did his best to get his team back in the game, hitting back to back homeruns in the 5th and 7th innings. Park finished with 4 RBIs but it wasn't enough. KIA was lead by right fielder Na Ji-Wan who went 3 for 4 with 3 RBIs, including a homerun in the 1st inning. The Tigers also set a new record in this game, after making 6 pitching changes in the top of the 7th, the most pitching substitutions in a single inning in KBO history.. The win went to KIA starter Kim Jin-Woo. The series ends with KIA winning 2 games. Friday's game was cancelled due to rain and will be made up later in the season. KIA is now on a 7 game winning streak, and they will have a great opportunity to extend it as they face bottom feeder Hanwha next week.

Samsung 7 - NC 7, Changwon [Box Score]

NC held the lead for most of the game, ahead 6-2 after 5 innings, but Samsung slowly worked their way back into it, even taking the lead at 7-6 in the top of the 8th inning on a 2-RBI triple by Jeong Hyeong-Sik. NC would tie the game in the bottom of the 8th on a solo homerun by third baseman Mo Chang-Min. It was Mo's second homerun of the day, having also hit another solo shot in the bottom of the 5th. It would be the final run of the game, as the teams played through 12 and ended with a 7-7 tie.

Mo Chang-Min's game-tying homerun

Lotte 4 - Hanwha 3, Busan [Box Score]

Lotte scored all 4 of their runs in the 4th inning, mostly as a result of poor Hanwha pitching, as starter Yu Chang-Sik and reliever Kim Kwang-Soo combined for 5 walks in the inning. Hanwha would slowly chip their way back into the game, scoring a run each in the 5th, 6th, and 7th innings, but they still ended up 1 run short. Lotte won the series 2-1.

Saturday KBO Game Highlights (2013/06/15)

Jun
15

LG 9 - Nexen 0, Seoul (Jamsil)

LG's Radhames Liz pitched a great game, going the full 9 innings allowing just 5 hits for his first complete game shutout of his KBO career. With the score tied 0-0, a bizarre sequence took place in the bottom of the 5th inning. With 2 outs and the bases loaded, Nexen's Brandon Knight was on the mound facing LG's Park Yong-Taik. Park hit a grounder to third base and Nexen third baseman Kim Min-Seong made a diving stop and threw the ball to second base. It looked like an out, and some of the Nexen team had already begun running off the field, but the umpire ruled the play safe. The call was argued, but in the end it would stand, and the inning would continue. LG, now leading 1-0, would go on to score a total of 8 runs in the inning, all with 2 outs on the board, including a grand slam by center fielder Lee Byeong-Kyu. The Twins would score one more run in the bottom of the 7th on a solo homerun from Moon Seon-Jae to give us the final score of 9-0. LG now leads the series 2-0. It will be the 8th consecutive series that LG has won.

Hanwha 3 - Lotte 2, Busan

The game was tied 2-2 after 6 innings. The game winner came in the top of the 7th in the form of an RBI single by Hanwha first baseman Kim Tae-Wan. Kim Hyuk-Min got the win for the Eagles, giving up 6 hits and 2 runs in 7 innings of work. The loss went to Lotte reliever Kang Yong-Sik, as starter Ko Won-Jun left the game with the score tied after 6 innings. The series is tied 1-1.

NC 8 - Samsung 3, Changwon

Samsung first baseman Lee Seung-Yeop hit a solo homerun for Samsung in the bottom of the 8th, his 351st homerun of his career which ties the all-time record set by now retired former Samsung teammate Yang Joon-Hyuk. One more homerun will give Lee the record. Unfortunately, this was the only good news for Samsung today. The Dinos scored early and often, leading 7-0 after 5 innings.  So Min-Han was the winning pitcher, allowing 5 hits and zero runs in 5 1/3 innings. The series is tied 1-1

Friday KBO Game Highlights (2013/06/14)

Jun

LG 4 - Nexen 3, Seoul (Jamsil)

Nexen took the lead with a 2-run homer by Lee Seong-Yeol in the top of the 2nd. The Twins would score 1 run in the bottom half of the inning on an RBI triple by Moon Seon-Jae to make the score 2-1. LG would then take the lead in the bottom of the 4th on a 2-run homerun by Lee Byeong-Kyu. The score remaine 3-2 in favor of the Twins until the top of the 8th when Nexen tied the score on an RBI single by Lee Taek-Keun to put the score at 3-3 heading into the 9th inning. Nexen would fail to score in the top half, but in the bottom of the 9th, after 2 quick outs the Twins put together a rally to win the game. A single from Lee Byeong-Kyu, followed by a single from Lee Jin-Young, followed by the walk-off double from Moon Seon-Jae for the win. It was Moon's first walk-off of his career. Both starting pitchers had quality starts, with Nexen's Kim Young-Min going 7 innings while allowing 5 hits and 3 runs. LG's Ryu Jae-Kuk went 6 1/3 innings allowing 5 hits and 2 runs. The win went to LG closer Bong Jung-Keun, while Nexen's Lee Bo-Keun was stuck with the loss. LG continues to play great baseball. The Twins are 9-2 so far in the month of June, and they have won 12 of their last 15 games. Nexen, on the other hand, has hit a bit of a slump, having now lost 5 games in a row. LG now stands just 2.5 games behind Nexen for 2nd place in the league.

Moon Seon-Jae's game winner

Lotte 9 - Hanwha 5, Busan

Lotte went up early, scoring 4 runs in the bottom of the 2nd. Hanwha took the lead in the top of the 5th, scoring all 5 of their runs in one inning. But while the Eagle's scoring was over, the Giants still had a lot left in the tank. They scored one run to tie the game in the bottom of the 5th, and scored 2 runs each in the 7th and 8th to take the win with a final score of 9-5. Shane Youman pitched 5 innings for Lotte, giving up 8 hits, 7 of which were in Hanwha's huge 5th inning. Neither starter got the decision. Hanwha's Denny Bautista also went 5 innings, allowing 7 hits and 4 runs. The win went to Lotte reliever Chong Tae-Hyon and the loss went to Hanwha's Yoon Keun-Young.

Kim Tae-Kyun's Racist Remarks about Shane Youman

Jun
13

I've been busy this week, so I'm a little late on this story. Among many recent scandals in the league, another one this week concerns Kim Tae-Kyun of the Hanwha Eagles. Kim was interviewed by hosts of an internet radio show and asked which pitcher in the league was most difficult to hit against. Kim responded that Lotte's African-American pitcher Shane Youman was the toughest because "His face is too black, so it is hard to bat because his white teeth and the ball confuses me when he smiles on the mound. So, I suffered a lot." Netizens were quick to react to the comments, and Kim issued an apology.

I won't go into a lot of detail on this one, as there's already been a lot of English coverage of this story. See the links below and share your thoughts in the comments.
