Hanhwa 2 - SK 6, Incheon [Box Score] [Video Highlights]

Hanhwa's short-stop Song Kwang-Min is setting the world on fire, committing an error in the 7th today which makes five errors in six games so far this season for the butterfingered Eagle. Caleb Clay started off rocky, allowing the first four Wyvern's batters to reach base, including hitting Luke Scott (0-1, HBP, BB, IBB) with a pitch and giving up a run.  He settled down after that and pitched solidly through the 5th. The Eagles scored two runs themselves in the 2nd, with catcher Kim Min-Soo knocking both in on a solid single, but that's all SK's starter Ross Wolf would allow on the day. The Wyverns had a four run 6th inning, taking advantage of a tired Clay when the coaching staff left him in the game longer than they should have probably figuring that a tired Clay is better than a rested Hanhwa bullpen. The Wyverns scored one last run in the 8th to put the nail in the coffin and that was the game. Ross Wolf picked up the win on six innings pitched allowing 5 hits, giving up 3 walks and 2 earned runs. Hanhwa's Felix Pie went 1-4 on the day, not helping his team out much in the offense department.

KIA 9 - Doosan 6 Seoul (Jamsil) [Box Score] [Video Highlights]

Doosan got on the board early scoring a run when the first two batters of the game were walked. KIA came back with two runs in the 5th off an An Chi-Hong double, another in the 6th and five more in the 7th, including a lead off triple by An Chi-Hong. They scored their final run in the top of the 9th off a pinch-hit sacrifice fly by Kang Han-Wool. Doosan came back gamely with single runs in each of the 6th and the 8th and mounted a late game rally in the bottom of the 9th, scoring three. The Tiger's Brett Pill went 3-5 on the day, collecting an RBI and a run scored while Doosan's Jorge Cantu took the day off. KIA starter Song Eun-Bom got the win on 6 ⅔ innings pitched allowing 2 runs on 6 hits and 3 walks. The Tiger's Jairo Ascencio gave up an an earned run on four hits and one walk in a single inning pitched.

Doosan 4 - Nexen 6, Seoul (Mokdong) [Box Score] [Video Highlights]

The umps weren't calling a lot of strikes today, resulting in a total of sixteen walks, ten of which coming from Doosan's pitchers. Nexen struck first when Doosan's starting pitcher Lee Jae-Woo gave up a double, walked a man and then hit Hur Do-Hwan to load the bases in the 2nd. Lead-off man Seo Geon-Chang took advantage of the opportunity by hitting a single that knocked two men in. Doosan came back with the assistance of Nexen starting pitcher Moon Sung-Hyun's generosity in the 4th. Moon walked three in the inning, the third walk with the bases loaded to score a run. Doosan third-baseman Lee Won-Seok took advantage of the resultant loaded bases to score two more off a single, giving the Bears the lead. Doosan scored another run in the 6th but it wasn't enough to keep Nexen at bay.  In the bottom of the same inning, Nexen tied it up with the tying run being walked in by Doosan reliever Yun Myeong-Jun. Nexen put the go-ahead run on the board in the 7th off a Yun Seok-Min single, and added another run in the 8th capitalizing on an error by Doosan catcher Yang Yui-Ji to end the game. Heroe's reliever Ma Jung-Kil picked up the win with one inning of no hit ball pitched, allowing two walks. Foreign position players didn't do much on the day, with Jorge Cantu going 0-4 and Vinny Rottino riding the pine (for the second game) and going 0-1 as a pinch hitter.

NC 9 - KIA 3, Gwangju [Box Score] [Video Highlights]

The action in Gwangju came early on as the Dinos put up five runs in the 2nd inning. It started with a solo shot by NC designated hitter Lee Ho-Jun and continued through the lineup with all nine batters getting a chance at the plate.  Not to be outdone, KIA put three runs on the board starting in similar fashion when Brett Pill went long in his first plate appearance.  Pill had a great game at the plate, going 3-4 and missed hitting the cycle because he couldn't manage to get the elusive triple. Those three runs were the entirety of KIA's offense on the day, but NC didn't stop there. In the 3rd, Coffee and Waffles (1-3 and an HBP) showed that he isn't just good at winning prizes from the street machines by hitting one over the fence himself for a single run. He is not, however, that great in the speed department and was picked off in the 2nd. The Dinos racked up three more runs in the 4th to wrap up the game, and the Tigers never managed to score another run. Thad Weber got the win, allowing 7 hits and 2 walks in 6 innings pitched.

SK 13 - LG 8, Seoul (Jamsil) [Box Score] [Video Highlights]

LG's starting pitcher, Ryu Jae-Kuk got off to a rocky start, hitting two of the first three batters faced and allowing the Wyverns to bat around and score five runs in the 1st inning, including a Luke Scott RBI single (1-5 on the day) and then another single run in the 3rd which started from walking the first two batters faced. The Twins didn't give up so easily, though, scoring a couple of runs in the 2nd and three more in the 3rd, with Josh Bell (3-4, with a walk) hitting his first of two home runs in the game. LG even briefly took the lead in the 6th capitalizing on back-to-back Wyvern errors to score pinch-runner Moon Seon-Jae.  SK wasn't finished with the offense, though, scoring seven additional runs spread out over the 7th, 8th and 9th innings giving them an insurmountable lead. Josh Bell did his best, though with his second homerun of the game in the bottom of the 9th, but it was too little, too late and the Wyverns walked away with the game. Interestingly, Bell hit homeruns from both sides of the plate in today's game, only the fifth time that has happened in KBO history. SK reliever Park Jeong-Bae got his second win of the season facing four batters and retiring them all.

Samsung 6 - Hanhwa 5, Daejeon [Box Score] [Video Highlights]

Hanhwa's terrible relief is again the story of their downfall.  In a bad 9th inning, Eagle's pitcher Choi Young-Hwan threw back to back wild pitches, tying the league record for most consecutive wild pitches, but that was small potatoes in a game with six wild pitches total which also tied the league record for most wild pitches in a game. To be fair, one of those wild pitches was from the Lions, so it isn't entirely Hanhwa's fault. As for the game, Hanhwa again started with a nice lead, scoring three runs in the 2nd inning, two coming from a Felix Pie (2-4, 1BB and caught stealing once) single. Hanhwa added to their lead with a run in the 3rd before Samsung got on the board with a two run 6th. In the bottom of the 6th, Hanhwa shortstop Song Kwang-Min went long to bolster their advantage, but all was for naught since the Eagles had to go to their terrible bullpen. Samsung cut down the lead with two more runs in the 8th, but the real story is the 9th inning. Hanhwa reliever Song Chang-Sik gave up back to back homeruns before being replaced by Choi Young-Hwan who's wild pitching was mentioned earlier. Samsung's foreign position player Yamaico Navarro went from player of the game yesterday to going 0-5 today. Samsung reliever Shim Chang-Min got the win on the day, facing two and striking two out.

Hanhwa 2 - Lotte 11, Busan [Box Score] [Video Highlights]

Hanhwa's reign at the top of the league was short-lived. Today's only game, a make up game from the rain out on Saturday, really showed some of the Eagle's weaknesses. The main problem is the Hanhwa bullpen, who gave up ten of the eleven runs today. Eagle's starter Song Chang-Hyun wasn't stellar on the mound, but did only allow one run in five innings pitched.  Hanhwa started out solid, with a one run 1st inning on consecutive singles by Jeong Keun-Woo, Felix Pie (2-4 on the day) and Kim Tae-Kyun. They added a second run on a solo long ball by Jeong Hyun-Seok in the 4th, but that was all the offense the Eagles could muster today. Lotte took advantage of Hanhwa's poor bullpen, scoring six in the 6th, four in the 7th and a final run in the 8th. During the onslaught, Giant's catcher Kang Min-Ho went yard twice (for 3 RBIs) and second-baseman Jeong Hoon hit a big two RBI triple. While all of Hanhwa's relief was terrible, two pitchers deserve special mention for going above and beyond the call of duty.  First, Choi Yeong-Hwan allowed two earned runs and retired no runners, leaving him with an ERA of 27.00 on the year (he managed to put down two batters on Saturday), and the Sam Malone Infinite ERA Lifetime Achievement Award goes to Yun Ki-Ho, who also gave up two earned runs without an out, but without a previous appearance on the mound achieved the elusive sideways 8. Pitching wasn't Hanhwa's only weak point, though, as defense a short-stop left a lot to be desired as well. Song Kwang-Min had two errors on the day, leading to two unearned runs. Lotte starter Chang Won-Jun got the victory on 62/3 innings pitched, 7 hits and 2 earned runs.

Nexen 4 - SK 6, Incheon [Box Score] [Video Highlights]

Nexen started strong again today with center fielder Lee Taek-Keun's 2-run homerun in the top of the 1st to take an early 2-0 lead. SK would manage to work there way back into the game, going up 3-2 following a homerun from catcher Cho In-Sung in the 4th. The game was finally decided in the 8th inning. The Heroes manage 2 runs off of 4 straight singles in the top half to regain the lead at 4-3, but the Wyverns answered right back with 3 runs of their own in the bottom of the inning. Cho In-Sung hit a 2-RBI single, and finished the day with a total of 4 RBIs for the Wyverns.

LG 14 - Doosan 4, Seoul (Jamsil) [Box Score] [Video Highlights]

LG got some revenge for yesterday's loss with a complete blowout of Doosan today. The Twins scored a total of 14 runs, and half of those in a 5th inning that included a grand slam from right fielder Lee Jin-Young. LG rookie starting pitcher Lim Ji-Sub got the win going 5 innings while allowing 3 hits and 1 run. Lim is 19 years old and graduated from high school a month ago. He became just the 4th pitcher in KBO history to get a win in his first start after joining the league directly from high school. Starter No Kyeong-Eun takes the loss for Doosan after giving up 6 hits, 5 walks, and 6 runs in 4 innings.

KIA 5 - Samsung 8, Daegu [Box Score] [Video Highlights]

Samsung took an early lead when Yamaico Navarro hit a 2-run homerun in the bottom of the 1st, but KIA came back to go up 3-2 in a 3rd inning that included 3 walks and 2 singles. The lead didn't last long however, as Samsung scored 4 runs in the 4th to go ahead for good. American first baseman Brett Pill made his first start for the Tigers after sitting on the bench yesterday. Pill struck out on 3 pitches in his first at bat, but made up for it with a homerun in 6th inning. Pill's efforts would not be enough though, as Samsung wins 8-5.

Opening Day in Incheon

Mar
30

Ah, baseball's opening day... The crack of the bats, the roar of the crowds, the tang of squid being grilled, the slurp of ramyeon noodles being eaten with chopsticks. From the moment you approach any of the eight main pro baseball venues, it's clear you're not in Kansas anymore.

The SK Wyverns home field is Munhak Stadium, part of a huge sports complex in Incheon. Opening Day 2014, was overcast with a chill in the air, but that never dampened the enthusiasm of the 27,600-strong full-capacity crowd.

Baseball fever grips you before you even leave the subway, as so many attendees proclaim their team affiliation with jerseys bearing the name of their favorite player, and an ajumma hands out a free baseball pap at the top of the escalator.

The short walk to the ticket window is lined with vendors hawking beer, chicken, squid, kimbap and whatever else you may need for a day in the park. A 330 ml beer will cost 2,000 W, and eight inches of kimbap runs cheon won. It's generally the same price once you're inside, so you don't need to stock up. Reserved tickets six rows back from the third base line were 10,000 W; you can bring the whole family for a day out, and get home with money in your pocket.

The Wyverns hosted the Nexen Heroes, and while there was some exciting infield action in the early innings, the game was mostly a story of the Heroes hitters taking a 2 - 1 lead in the third, and adding two runs in each of the 6th, 8th and 9th for a decisive 8 - 3 victory.

Saturday KBO Game Highlights (2014/03/29)

Mar

Nexen 8 - SK 3, Incheon [Box Score] [Video Highlights]

Nexen's hitting looked solid on opening day, jumping to an early lead and then never looking back. A great throw home by Vinny Rottino kept SK from scoring in the bottom of the 1st, and caused some excitement with a big collision at the plate. The teams traded runs in the 3rd, with Nexen scoring because SK third-baseman Choi Jeong botched a throw to first, allowing Vinny Rottino (1-4, and he hit into a double play) to reach second, rather than getting the easy out. This allowed Rottino to score off a big double by Yoo Han-Joon. SK's run came from a Luke Scott (1-2 on the day with 2 walks) long ball. The Heroes took the lead for good in the top of the 4th with a Rotino RBI single. Nexen scored two more runs in each of the 6th, 8th, and 9th innings to cement their lead, with a center-field triple by Kang Jung-Ho being the main highlight. SK scored another two runs in the 6th off a Park Jung-Kwon homerun but that was the extent of their offense. Andy Van Hekken gets the opening day win with 52/innings pitched, allowing two runs.

LG 4 - Doosan 5, Seoul (Jamsil) [Box Score] [Video Highlights]

LG was the first team on the board when Doosan starter Dustin Nippert walked in a run in the top of the 1st. The Bears (who, incidentally scored all five runs today via homerun) tied it up in the 2nd with a Yang Yui-Ji solo shot. The Twins retook the lead in the 3rd, scoring two runs including one by Josh Bell (0-2, two walks), who scored after reaching base on a walk. Bears foreign position player Jorge Cantu (2-4) put Doosan back in the lead in the 4th with a three run homerun and Oh Jae-Won put the icing on the cake with his solo blast in the 5th. Nippert took the win on five innings pitched and three earned runs.

Saturday KBO Game Highlights (2014/03/22)

Mar
23

Doosan 7 - SK 7, Incheon [Box Score]

SK was up four runs early on scoring 2 in the 2nd and 2 in the 3rd, with third-baseman Choi Jeong and second-baseman Na Ju-Hwan both going yard. Wyvern first-baseman Park Jung-Kwon hit a solo shot of his own in the 6th to put the score at 5-1 SK. The Bears' bats showed up for the game late, but scored three in the 7th and two more in the 8th including another solo long ball by Bears third-baseman Lee Won-Seok to tie the game at 6 apiece. Doosan took a one run lead in the 9th on a single by Oh Jae-Il, who was an impressive four for five at the plate today. SK left the game at a tie by scoring a final run in the 9th on a Cho Dong-Hwa double.

NC 9 - Samsung 4, Daegu [Box Score]

The Dinos started off the game with a Park Min-Woo triple that set the tone for the rest of the game's action.  While the triple itself led to only one run in the 1st, they scored four more in the 2nd, with two coming from a homerun by Na Sung-Bum. NC kept it up with two more runs in the 3rd from solo shots by homeplate.kr favorite Coffee and Waffles (who went three for three with a walk on the day) and Na Sung-Bum's second blast of the game. Samsung came back with a four run 5th when Jeong Hyung-Sik went yard with two men on base, and Choi Hyeong-Woo decided he wanted a piece of that action too and hit a solo long ball himself. To put a nail in Samsung's coffin, Mo Chang-Min hit the fifth and final long ball of the game (with Coffee and Waffles on-base) in the top of the 7th. NC starter Lee Jae-Hak got the win with 42/3 innings pitched, 4 earned runs off  7 hits and a walk.

KIA 4 - LG 2, Seoul (Jamsil) [Box Score] [Video Highlights]

Slow and steady wins the race, at least it did in Jamsil today.  The Tigers scored individual runs in the 5th, 6th, 7th and 9th to take the win. Kang Han-Wool's double in the 5th started it off and he continued with a homerun in the 7th. The run in the 6th came from Cory Riordan walking the first three batters he faced to load the bases. LG's two runs came in the 8th on a two RBI single by pinch-hitter Jeong Seong-Hoon but it was too little, too late.  The final KIA run in the 9th was walked in by LG reliever Ryu Taek-Hyun. KIA's starter D.J. Houlton earned the win giving up no runs on three hits in six innings pitched.

Thursday KBO Game Highlights (2014/03/20)

Mar
20

Hanhwa 2 - Doosan 5, Seoul (Jamsil) [Box Score] [Video Highlights]

The story of this game is really Hanhwa's four errors leading to two unearned runs. While the game still would have been Doosan's, better fielding by the Eagles would have made the game much closer. The Bears struck early, capitalizing on two consecutive fielding errors to get a run in off a sacrifice fly to left field by Kim Hyun-Soo in the bottom of the 1st. Doosan picked up another couple runs in the 4th on a Ko Young-Min shot that cleared the left field wall. They capitalized on Hanhwa's butterfingers again in the 8th, getting another two runs starting when Eagles shortstop Song Kwang-Min made his second error of the game.  Hanhwa finally put some numbers on the scoreboard in the top of the 9th when pinch-hitter Lee Hak-Jun hit a two RBI double. Doosan starter Yu Heui-Kwan chalked up the win with six innings pitched giving up six hits and no runs.

LG 3 - SK 3, Incheon [Box Score] [Video Highlights]

The battle between the two letter teams ended in a draw today and the blame can solely be placed on LG shortstop Kwon Yong-Gwon's shoulders for botching n easy double play in the 4th which led to an SK run. SK got on the board in the first, taking advantage of two walks to get one run in on a Luke Scott sacrifice fly. The aforementioned error in the 4th got SK their second run off a single by catcher Cho In-Sung. LG got on the board in the 6th when right-fielder Lee Jin-Young hit into a double play but still managed to get an RBI for his effort. SK got their third and final run when Cho In-Sung knocked one out of the park in the bottom of the 7th. LG had the final offensive burst of the game when they scored two runs, one RBI of which coming from Josh Bell, who was atoning for striking out his two previous plate appearances.
