Coming soon... Korean Baseball Movie Starring… A Digital Gorilla

Yes, you read that title correctly. The film is titled Mr. Go (미스터고) and is expected to be the summer blockbuster movie of the year. Directed by Kim Yong-Hwa, the movie is noteworthy for its use of special effects and motion capture technology. It will be the first Korean movie ever filmed in full stereoscopic 3D, and has a budget of $20 million dollars. Perhaps nothing by Hollywood standards, but quite high for a Korean film.

And what have they spent all this money and technology on? A comedy about a Chinese circus gorilla who is brought to Korea and trained to play baseball for the Doosan Bears. (I wonder if he counts towards their foreign player limit?) The film will reportedly feature cameo appearances by MLB stars Ryu Hyun-Jin, Choo Shin-Soo, and some current Doosan Bears players. The film is scheduled for release in Korea in July 2013.

My first thought was that this might be a rip-off of the 1996 American movie Ed, but that seems not to be the case. As ridiculous as the story sounds, Mr. Go is actually based on a 1985 Korean comic book called 제7구단 (The 7th Team), which I am told was quite popular at the time.

Below are two videos. The first is the trailer and the second is a slightly longer “making of” video.

Sometime in the future I would like to compile a list of Korean baseball movies with simple reviews… stay tuned.
