Thursday Game Highlights (2013/05/23)

Doosan 2 - Nexen 1, Seoul (Jamsil)

This game turned out quite differently than the previous 2 games of the series which were both high-scoring affairs, each ending in a Nexen victory. In tonight's game Doosan lead 1-0 until the top of the 8th when Nexen was able to score the tying run on a double by Lee Seong-Yeol followed by a single by Park Dong-Won. The game would remain tied at 1-1 heading into extra innings. Nexen never threatened to score in the extra frames, but Doosan managed to load the bases with one out in the bottom of the 11th. Doosan's Jung Soo-Bin hit a walk-off single to center field, well beyond the reach of Nexen's Lee Taek-Keun who was playing shallow in an attempt to prevent the run from scoring. Doosan won the game, but Nexen won the series 2 games to 1.

Jung's walk-off single

LG 3 - Samsung 2, Daegu

Samsung put the first run on the board in the bottom of the 1st on a single by Choi Hyeong-Woo to give Samsung the lead at 1-0. LG scored all of their runs in one inning. hitting 6 singles in the top of the 6th which resulted in three runs. Samsung would score one more in the bottom of the 6th, but it would be the last run of the game. LG's Ben Jukich earned the win, just his second of the season. Another interesting note about this game, both teams recorded zero walks. I'm having trouble determining when the last time that has happened, but I have a feeling it's at least somewhat rare. LG has now won 2 games in a row, and won the series against Samsung 2-1.

KIA 10 - Hanwha 2, Gwangju

More or less an old-fashioned blowout down in Gwangju. KIA was consistent, scoring at least one run in 6 out of 8 innings that they came to bat. KIA's Kim Joo-Hyeong hit two homeruns in consecutive at-bats, once in the 4th and once in the 5th inning. Hanwha never threatened a comeback. KIA's Henry Sosa went 7 2/3 innings allowing only 3 hits and 1 run. He earned the win, which brings his season total to 6 wins, tied with Samsung's Bae Young-Soo for most wins in the league. KIA won the series 2-1.

NC 6 - SK 2, Incheon

SK took the early lead in the bottom of the 1st after a double by Kim Kang-Min and a single by Han Dong-Min to bring him home, putting SK ahead 1-0. Unfortunately SK wouldn't score again until the bottom of the 9th. Meanwhile during the 7 innings in between, NC managed to put 6 runs on the board. The story of the game for NC was third baseman Mo Chang-Min who made his first appearance of the season. Mo hit 2 home runs, one in the 6th and one in the 8th?, becoming the 6th batter in the KBO this year to hit homeruns in consecutive at-bats, and the second player to do it on the same night after KIA's Kim Joo-Hyeong. NC won the series 2-1.
